Titchfield Village

By Group

On the 16th of November, in the year of 1891,
In the little town of Titchfield, a murderous deed was done,
By a woman Alice Hinton, to call her by her name,
She killed three little children, who never were to blame.

It was on a Monday morning, the sun did brightly shine,
When these three little children, were by their mother slain,

Policeman William Harfield, entered by the door,
And saw the daughter Augusta, laid lifeless on the floor.

That noble policeman, he did his duty well,
The sight he saw that morning, no other tongue can tell,
He rushed in through the kitchen, caught Alice by her side,
For if he had not done so, by her own hand she would have died.

The doctors soon attended, and worked with will and skill,
They did all in their power, to save poor little Will,
But all they did that morning; their labour was in vain,
For soon poor little Willie, was numbered with the slain.

The doctors in attendance, were Oliver and Hoare,
They did all in their power, as I have said before,
They came to Alice Hinton, her wound they neatly bound,
It took five able-bodied men, to hold her on the ground.

A cab then was ordered, to take her right away,
She was brought before the magistrates, at 12 o'clock that day,
The doctor then came forward, and said she was insane,
She was sent to Knowle Asylum, and there she was detained.

These three poor little children, that ne' er did any harm,
Were called away to Jesus, who took them in his arms,
Their souls have gone to Heaven, their bodies to the clay,
And all who lived in Titchfield, will ne'er forget that day.

Two months in Knowle Asylum, Alice Hinton did abide,
She was brought again to Fareham, and before a Justice tried,

She was sent to take her trial, at Winton County Hall,

Charged with wilfully murdering,

her three poor children small.

Yes, on the 29th March, in the year 1892
The murderous Alice Hinton, again was brought in view.
Before the Judge and Jury, she appeared in the dock,
The case came on for hearing, at exactly 2 o'clock.

The people and the Jury, and likewise Justice Day,
All gave the best attention, to what there was to say,
The Jury found her 'Guilty', that the children she had slain,
But on the doctors evidence, it was proved she was insane.
